The BC Lions may have turned the corner after a disappointing 1-4 start to the CFL season. This past weekend, a clearly motivated Lions team defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 35-20. The Roughriders dropped to 3-3 in the early going in the CFL season.
Lions defensive end Brent Johnson said that the motivation for this game was simple:
“We were sick of losing. That was our only option – to win tonight. This was the must wins of must wins.”
Johnson led a tenacious Lions defense with three QB sacks. Overall, the BC stop unit combined for five QB sacks and three interceptions in their best performance of the season.
Lions running back Martell Mallett caught one touchdown pass, ran for another and generally made himself a problem for the Riders defense all night. After the game, he praised the play of his offensive line:
“We just went out there and executed. The offensive line blocked well. I was just hitting the holes. They opened it for me and I got in it.”
BC starting QB Buck Pierce had been hearing some criticism from the Vancouver media suggesting that he lose his starting spot. His solid play in the victory may have turned down the heat for now. After the game, he spoke of the team effort in the win:
“I was very proud of our offence tonight. “The way we stayed poised, the way we moved the ball. Running and throwing the ball, we were very good.”
His Saskatchewan counterpart Darian Durrant blamed the loss on his teams lack of execution and failure to capitalize on opportunities:
“It was frustrating. B.C. gave us plenty of opportunities to put more points on the board. We just didn’t capitalize.”
Despite the much needed win, Lions coach Wally Buono realizes that his team still has plenty of work to do:
“We have to play much better football than what we did. I saw the intensity that you need, I see the resilience and I saw some guys make some plays.”
BC now hits the road, traveling to Toronto to play the struggling Argonauts on Thursday. Saskatchewan will host the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

The New York Giants jumped out to a 17-0 lead against their NFC East rivals from Washington, and were never threatened as they went on to beat the Redskins by a final score of 23-17. Defensive stalwart Osi Umenyiora returned from a serious knee injury and scored a touchdown on a fumble return, while the Giants offense controlled the ball well and completely dominated the time of possession. The Giants held a lopsided edge of 36:08 to 23:52 in that department, which helped them overcome a couple of turnovers. Eli Manning played well, throwing for 259 yards and a touchdown to counteract one interception.
NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Redskins as +5 road underdogs were likely not heartened by the near miss on a backdoor cover. The Redskins scored a touchdown with 1:30 left to get within a ” point of the spread but the Giants still got the cover by the slimmest of margins. The Skins dropped to 13-17 ATS over the past three years with the setback, while New York improved their pointspread mark to an impressive 27-11 against the number. NFL totals players also witnessed a late game change of fortune due to the Skins touchdown, with the 7 points pushing the point total OVER the posted 37. New York evened their O/U record at 19-19 over the past three seasons, while Washington made a dent in their lopsided UNDER biased record. The Skins have gone UNDER in 21 of their last 33 lined contests.
None of the Giants players were as elated with the victory as defensive end Umenyiora. Hed missed the entire 2008 season due to a knee injury, and was happy to be back contributing to a victory:
“It was unbelievable and now all that is in the past. I can’t even explain it to you, when something like that is taken away from you. Last year I missed it. I was happy I was able to come back in there.”
His touchdown return came in the second quarter, when he knocked the ball away from Redskins QB Jason Campbell and raced for the endzone:
“To be honest, I don’t know what happened. That’s the way most plays are made. You just go out there and sometimes good things happen. They always get on me about knocking the ball out and not picking it up. When I saw it, I just picked it up.”
Campbell chalked it up to a simple mental lapse:
“Osi made a great play on the ball. It’s something you have to understand as a quarterback you have to feel it more or slide up in the pocket.”
Umenyiora couldnt have had a better return to the NFL:
“Not only was it a W, but it was against an NFC East opponent. It was a great game.”
The Redskins will have a great opportunity to cash in their first win of the season this week as they step down in class to host the lowly St. Louis Rams. The Skins are a -10 home favorite with the total set at 36. Theyll continue feasting on the NFLs bottom feeders the following week as they travel to Detroit to play the hapless Lions before returning home for a game against the Tampa Bay Bucs on October 4th. The Giants have another big game on Sunday as they head to Dallas to face the Cowboys in the first regular season game in the new Cowboys Stadium. The Giants are a +3 road dog with the total set at 44. New York will carry a couple of amazing ATS runs into the game”the Giants are 12-3 against the spread as an underdog over the past three years, and have a 15-3 mark on the road. Theyll remain on the road for the following two weeks, facing Kansas City and Tampa Bay.

Important Tongue Piercing Information
If you’re thinking about getting a tongue piercing, what you are doing what’s right by researching the benefits and drawbacks first. Tongue piercings are very popular for plenty of reasons… be it for shock value, appearance, or pleasure enhancement (to name just one or two reasons). If you’re considering a tongue piercing – included but not limited to piercing of the tongue, tongue web, or uvula – there are lots of important factors you must consider before getting pierced.
Before we delve into the universal risks, each piercing possesses his own set of aftercare and precautions to understand. The most typical oral piercing is of course the tongue piercing, which to a professional piercer is just about the easiest piercings to perform. Usually performed directly through the biggest market of the tongue (although the tongue can be pierced in other places – but talk to your piercer first!) and the jewelry of choice is always a barbell. The barbell jewelry is used because tongue piercings will become swollen for a couple days to a week after the initial piercing, and the barbell can accommodate the swelling. Over time of 4-6 weeks, the jewelry can be replaced.
After a tongue piercing, it is STRONGLY advised not to smoke, engage in oral sex, or kiss. Proper cleaning ought to be done frequently, because the mouth is stuffed with bacteria. Although saliva is the body’s natural way of combating harmful bacteria, with an open wound say for example a piercing, the odds of infection do increase. With an open wound for instance a tongue piercing, the chance of diseases being transferred is greater too, including the Hepatitis strains and HIV. Heed the advice given to you by your piercer to prevent serious and unhealthy scenarios!
The tongue web, formerly called the frenetic linguine, is located beneath the tongue. This can be a piercing that’s not applicable to everyone – some folks don’t have tongue webs pronounced enough to pierce! Many piercer refuse to get this done piercing, not because of any extraordinary risks per say, but because most people don’t clean their tongue web piercing frequently enough (which leads to plaque build up) or can’t keep their tongue on the top of their mouth during the piercing. If you undertake get this piercing, clean it regularly because it is an open wound in the mouth and therefore prone to infection. If the piercing is not deep enough, the body will “reject” or “push out” the piercing – not particularly harmful, but unpleasant and should be avoided the same.
The final piercing that is wholly located within the mouth is considered an extreme piercing and it’s also still very rare (and some may argue, completely impractical even by piercing standards). The Uvula, informally known as the “dangle thing” or “punching bag” located at the back of the throat by the tonsils, can be pierced. Most piercers will not perform this, even though the procedure is simple. Many individuals don’t have their gag reflex controlled enough to successfully do the piercing (just imagine the hazards of gagging with a sharp needle in your mouth!), and the uvula is very active pierce of tissue hence the potential for the body rejecting the piercing is very real. Jewelry that is rejected will almost definitely be swallowed, which can pose health risks.
This information is not to put you off getting a piercing of the tongue, tongue web, or uvula, but it’s not wise to trapeze into a piercing parlor (and side note: don’t even THINK about getting an oral piercing anywhere other than a sterile professional piercing parlor) to get an oral piercing on impulse. To prevent infection or rejection, consider your lifestyle: Do you smoke? This alone will definitely harass your new piercing and prolong the healing process. Are you orally fixated, therefore prone to tinkering and playing with your jewelry? Constant playing with tongue piercings can cause irreversible damage to the gum and teeth. Are you getting surgery soon? Your oral piercing will need to come out – surgeons insist on it to prevent surgical complications – and once you come out of anesthesia, your piercing will be completely healed. Have you had a tongue pierced before and also get it re pierced? Some piercers will refuse on the basis that scar tissue is very difficult to pierce through. Listen to your intuition. If your gut feeling is saying not to get an oral piercing, do not do it! Should you get an oral piercing, seriously consider your body. If something is wrong, your body will show you!
