The Texas Longhorns Coach Shows No Worries To The Under Man Problem

Fall camp opened for the Texas Longhorns with coach Brown having a lot of fixing to do. In all, 18 of their players have left the team and of this 18, many had left behind key positions in the game. Included in this number are QB Colt McCoy, WR Jordan Shipley, AT Adam Ulatoski and OG Charlie Tanner.

McCoy has signed an agreement with Cleveland’s Browns. The Cincinnati Bengals got Jordan Shipley in the 2010 NFL draft. Two team members has gone in as free agents in other teams. Houston signed a contract with Ulatoski and the New York Jets got Tanner.

The first concern of fall camp for this season is to train freshmen and sophomore players and enable them to take the place of older players who can then be moved up to man the important positions that were left behind after the exodus. Obviously, the task is not an easy one.

Despite the long odds they seem to face, coach Mack Brown is optimistic about the results of the forthcoming games. He cites the fact that in the 2008 season when the team which was reckoned to garner a 9-3 finish, they gave everyone the surprise of the year by nearly flattening out the competition with a 12-1 score. The year following, they upped that score one more point and earned the right to compete for the BCS National Championship trophy. They eventually lost but had already gained in the AP poll rankings. At the preseason tally for this year they are in slot #4.

Many critics say that rating is way too optimistic and exaggerated considering the ramshackle state in which the team finds itself this season. Optimistic or not, it certainly does a lot to increase their odds of getting a go at the championship again.

Coach Mack Brown believes in the power of belief. In a comment, he underscored the importance that self-expectation had in their last games. “When we weren’t expected by the public to win all the games and our players and coaches still expected to…”

On the opposite bank, some pundits are saying that the Longhorns really do have a good shot at the trophy this season, citing one reason as being the fact that by the time they meet up with Texas A&M they will have gotten a good grip of their technique, power and coordination to probably come out victorious.

Additionally, game units have been undergoing rehabilitation. In doing so, players with talent have been fielded in key positions. For example, the back line now has Aaron Williams, Curtis Brown, Chyke Brown and Blake Gideon.

One big reason for being optimistic about this season’s games is sophomore Garrett Gilbert who is a dynamo of talent and determination. In the last championship, it took him time to adjust to the game play. When he finally did on the second half, he almost achieved the comeback that the Longhorns are reaching for.

Both sides of the camp have their reasons. Manpower alone doesn’t a victory win. There is much that tactics and determination can do. On the other hand there is the fact that coach Brown has a whole lot of training to do.

Linebacker Dont’a Hightower

Two factors are responsible for the successful career that Dont’a Hightower has with the Alabama Crimson Tide. First is his willingness to cooperate to the fullest with coach Nick Saban and second is his ability to understand game situations and respond quickly to them. He has learned to function as effectively situational defense as he does in 3-4 defense plays

Coach Saban is known for his knack of cooking up diverse game techniques and for assigning his players in unlikely positions depending on what he thinks is appropriate for facing the team’s current opponent. For that reason, the players who succeed under his guidance are those who can adapt and learn new techniques easily. He specializes in training ‘hybrid’ players who can play with equal efficiency in different positions.

Rolando McClain’s position of middle linebacker is now taken over by Hightower. He directs the play, makes the signals and checks the status of his team mates. When the team falls into the splitback formation, he takes on the position of quarterback on defense. In passes down the field his role is that of defensive end. Now that he is in the team, it will only take a little practice on his part to participate actively in their games.
