There are many types of airbrushes currently being sold at cake decorating stores, but cake decorators will generally use one of two types. The preferred one features a small reservoir at the top of the air gun itself, that holds the dye. This type is usually operated using small air compressor. The other type pulls the color directly from interchangeable bottles. The absolute best advice that I can provide to airbrush owners is simply to keep it clean! Airbrushes are also known as, “Airguns”. They really are both the same thing in the world of cake decorating.

Always suspend up the airbrush when it is not in use to keep the fragile needle in good operational order. A bent needle will cause spritzing or blobbing of color. It is best to flush the airbrush after each use and before using another color. Use lukewarm water in place of the color, and spray the water onto absorbent paper until the water sprays plain. Old newspapers work well to absorb the water. An intensive cleaning based on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and all-purpose-use cleaning will keep the airbrush in good working order.

The airbrush can be utilized in many different ways for cake decorating. The sprayed on colors will intensify over time. Please be sure to use colors which are marked “airbrush”, because if you use standard food color, it will eventually clog you instrument. The specially designed airbrush color is super strained and all of the really tiny pieces are filtered out. Practice is essential when learning to utilize an airbrush. One technique is to use a white piece of paper or white cardboard when practicing. Start with a mixture of sized dots, straight and wavy lines, thick and thin lines and general misting. Here is a great hint: Buy kids’s coloring book and practice on that, remember to keep within the lines!

Airbrushing can be a useful tool to add color to cakes, cupcakes, and even ice cream cakes. Given the truth that the icing color is white, the cake decorator can decorate several cakes directly, without having to alter icing colors. Don’t forget – the colors will deepen over time. Our favourite brand of airbrush colors are created by Chefmaster®. Expert cake decorating favor this brand, because they say that the color is more vibrant, and the this product line has the best selections. These colors can be found on the market: Orange, Flesh, Pink, Yellow, Blue,Red, Violet, Green, Brown, Black, Fuschia, Teal, White, Neon Pink, Neon Orange, Neon Yellow, Neon Blue, Neon Green, and Neon Purple. Custom colors may also be mixed to match a customer’s specific swatch.

One last trick that I’ve seen cake decorators do: Over the busy times, they pre-make hundreds of white roses from buttercreme or with a royal icing. When needed, the white roses are sprayed the color needed, through the use of an airbrush. Thank you, and for extra help please visit our on-line cake decorating supply store.
